Project Exchange

AUTHOR REFLECTIONS

Overall, I really enjoyed this project. The kids really got into it, and were really excited about the video aspect. I really enjoyed playing up the fact that they were "directing" a movie, so there was a big buzz surrounding that aspect of the projetc, which made kids work harder on the research and storyboard, because then they could actually get to the film-making. It was so great to see them all create their "pitch" for the movie and then share them out to their group. I noticed that there were many different facets of the project that allowed students to get engaged. Students who didnt feel as confident with interpreting the research were assets during the use of imovie. I wish that I had had more time to let the students make the movies more individualized. Originally, the students were going to be allowed to act in the movies if they wanted to, but due to a time crunch, I had to ask them to use imovie and images/clips they found on the internet, because it would have taken too long to edit original footage. I think that had we been able to allow them more creative freedom, the outcomes would have been even more impressive. If I could go back in time, I also would have kept a more stringent standard over the content of the dialogue in the film, in that, I would have liked to see students hold a more firmly to making the dialogue more like a spoken essay, with more facts included in the movie. This was an excellent project to do at the end of the year for me, because I knew the kids well enough to know what they strengths were, so the groups that I made really worked out well. It was great to see kids ending the year on a strong note, and because they were really engaged with the project, they really worked hard even up until the last day. It was really powerful for me to see the advanced-level final products that my students can create. I know the work that they do in digital media class is high-level, but it was powerful to see their work for both classes come together to create ainformative, sophisticated product. I am really proud of the work that they did!!
