Description

1. After their research papers were submitted, we introduced the exhibition by playing clips from various talkshows/news broadcasts and discussed what students liked and didn't like about each of them. Talkshows ranged from "60 Minutes" to "The Daily Show" to "Unsolved Mysteries." (A complete list of shows is on the "Exhibition Project Description" handout.)

2. After we viewed the clips we distributed the "Exhibition Project Description," which gave students the big picture plan of what they needed to complete. The handout explains the requirements of their news broadcast and the roles they would have in creating the news broadcast. The "Exhibition Introduction" PPT is a visual guide for students while we went over the handout.

In addition, a group of four students from each class were deemed as "editors". This "crew" of students worked directly with the Digital Media teacher and learned the basics of filming and editing. Upon completion of filming, each crew student was responsible for editing one of the class group's news broadcast.

3. We gave students a handout of the exhibition rubric to go over specifics of how they would be graded for the exhibition night.

Author Reflections

Many of the students enjoyed watching "The Daily Show" and wanted to emulate this style. It is important to also include what is difficult about each host's style.
